About Me
Greetings!

"Who am I? Why am I here?"  One of my favorite quotes of all time.  If you don't recall, a gentleman by the name of Admiral James Stockdale opened up a debate with those two short sentences when he was Ross Perot's running mate many years ago.  It just seems fitting for me to use it myself here right now.  Please let me explain who I am, and why I am here!

Business and accounting have been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember.  My earliest memories of business come from my maternal grandfather who was a CPA.  C.A. Kerwin was his name; whenever I would visit his house I remember looking over his mounds of paperwork, files and weird "machines" on his many desks.  He was a very cool man.

While in high school I helped out in a family-run business that my brother owned.  While performing many aspects of the business, I truly enjoyed the bookkeeping duties the most.  While working there I also attended UW-Parkside in Kenosha.  I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree (MIS/Accounting) in 1984.

One of my first non-family positions was that with my local church where I was the bookkeeper for over ten years.  I also later became bot a Treasurer and a Trustee of St. Clare Church in Wind Lake.

My corporate experience came in 1987 for a company called Subro Audit, Inc.  I was the Finance Director through 1999 when my position was eliminated due to the sale of the company.

The President of Subro Audit and I then started a new business called New Start Homes, LLC.  Here I was the Managing Partner of a real estate investment firm that purchased, renovated and sold residential properties.  I obtained my Real Estate license and enjoyed a different aspect of what was an entirely new type of business for me.

My last position was as the Controller at Bern Office Systems in Milwaukee.  Bern re-manufacturer's workstations (Cubicles) and sells new and used office furniture.  I had been at Bern for over six years before the owners restructured the company.

As you can see, I have accounting experience with many types of organizations.  This makes me uniquely qualified to help many small businesses with their accounting needs.  As a consultant, I have also helped many individuals organize their new company by setting up their chart of accounts, accounting and payroll systems, various federal and state licenses/permits/Tax ID numbers etc.  These are all items that if not done correctly the first time can be extremely troublesome for years to follow.

Over the years I have always had "side jobs" doing bookkeeping for a number of small businesses.  I always had a "Day Job", but seemed to also work at night or on weekends helping out other small businesses.  It's something I truly enjoy and when you do something you love, it's truly not work.  In 2002, I formed my company, Customized Business Services, LLC in an effort to become more structured.  Eventually I will retire for the "Day Job" and will exclusively be self-employed helping out other businesses.  I have had many types of clients over the years and enjoyed each and every one of them.  They all brought unique challenges to me.  I have learned something from each and every client I have ever had, and continue to learn everyday.

Whether it is setting up a chart of accounts, doing payroll, adjusting general journal entries, bank reconciliations, inventory, receivables, I was able to help them all.  Most of my clients ended up being able to understand the bookkeeping aspect of a business so that they were able to eventually do the work themselves.  After understanding what the business owner is like, and how the company operates, I design a bookkeeping system that allows non-accountants perform the daily/weekly/monthly tasks so that they can save money by not having a CPA or the like perform those activities.

I don't do taxes, I prepare the books for your company so that when you go to your tax preparer, regardless if he or she is a CPA or you go to a national franchise, you will be able to save money by having the information they need in an organized and accurate state.  By outsourcing your bookkeeping, you are able to save money by not having a CPA do the same tasks - at the end of the year when they are at their busiest time - that I do throughout the fiscal year.

Enough about me.  If you have any questions regarding my background, or the type of activities that I perform, I would be happy to speak with you at any time.  I can best be reached via
email or by phone to 262.939.0913

I was recently asked,

Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear from you soon!
